Distortions of Experimental Muon Arrival Time Distributions of Extensive Air Showers by the Observation Conditions
نویسنده
چکیده
Event-by-event measured arrival time distributions of Extensive Air Shower (EAS) muons are affected and distorted by various interrelated effects which originate from the time resolution of the timing detectors, from fluctuations of the reference time and the number (multiplicity) of detected muons spanning the arrival time distribution of the individual EAS events. The origin of these effects is discussed, and different correction procedures, which involve detailed simulations, are proposed and illustrated. The discussed distortions are relevant for relatively small observation distances (Rμ < 200 m) from the EAS core. Their significance decreases with increasing observation distance and increasing primary energies. Local arrival time distributions which refer to the observed arrival time of the first local muon prove to be less sensitive to the mass of the primary. This feature points to the necessity of arrival time measurements with additional information on the curvature of the EAS disk. 1 Corresponding author: [email protected] Preprint submitted to Elsevier Preprint 18 October 2001

The influence of the detector system on the measurements of muon arrival times in Extensive Air Showers (EAS)
Arrival time distributions of EAS muons carry information about the production profile of the EAS muonic component. The measured distributions are affected and distorted by various interwoven effects which arise from the time resolution of the timing detectors, from fluctuations of the reference time and the number of detected muons spanning the arrival time distribution of a single EAS event. ...

Nµ/Ne, muon to electron population ratio in extensive air showers at high altitudes has been shown to be a suitable estimator of primary cosmic rays mass composition. This study is based on simulated extensive air showers. The Nµ/Ne ratio has been obtained in 100 depths from the top of the atmosphere to the sea level for different primary particle masses and energies. An empirical relation bet...

In view of the current efforts to extend the KASCADE experiment (KASCADEGrande) for observations of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) of primary energies up to 1·10 eV, the features of muon arrival time distributions and their correlations with other observable EAS quantities have been scrutinised on basis of high-energy EAS, simulated with the Monte Carlo code CORSIKA and using in general the QGSJET...
متن کاملThe effect of atmospheric attenuation on inclined cosmic ray air showers
The increasing cosmic ray statistics collected by present experiments and the future prospects with new large arrays demand accurate calculations of the extensive air shower parameters (EAS). The energy of the primary particle is estimated by ground arrays fitting a lateral distribution function (LDF) to the particle densities at a given observing level. However, the lack of appropriate paramet...

KASCADE-Grande is a ground based multi-detector experiment measuring extensive air showers in order to study the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in the energy range from 10 eV to 10 eV. A Flash-ADC based data acquisition system in KASCADE-Grande allows to study the temporal structure of extensive air showers. Muons in extensive air showers are thought to arrive on average earlier than the pa...
